History
Our mission: “We return smiles to children with cancer.”
The main goal of the social movement is to assist every child and young adult to receive timely medical assistance at the level of world standards with the provision of a high quality of life in the future.
The parents of children with cancer have united to draw the attention of the authorities to the problems of cancer treatment and to raise public awareness about problems faced by seriously ill children.
The public association “Hematologists of the World for Children” was founded in 1989. It was transformed into the Chelyabinsk city public movement for helping children with cancer “Iskorka” in 2001. And in 2016, it was renamed Charity Foundation Iskorka.
The parents of children suffering from cancer made a direct appeal to different echelons of the Civil Services for help. Thanks to this, Chelyabinsk, with the support of the charity organization CARE-Germany, was included in the system of oncohematology centers.
As a result of complex and multifaceted activities of the regional administration, the medical staff of the regional children’s clinical hospital, and the social movement of parents, the survival rate of children with leukemia and malignancies reached 75% in the 90s, and 80% in 2000. This is not much inferior to European quality standards. And recovered children become healthy, full-fledged members of society.
There is data for February 2021: the survival rate of children with cancer in the Chelyabinsk region is 86%.
Charity Foundation Iskorka is a member of The International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parent Organisations (ICCCPO )and Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), it cooperates with similar organizations throughout Russia and the CIS.
